カラフルで遊び心のあるHouse Plantsの楽しい音楽は、彼らが進化系のバンドである証。
House PlantsはEd, Wheeler, E-cig とLittle Fellaによって構成された、サウス・ロンドンを拠点とするバンド。彼らは強いD.I.Y精神を持っており、ミュージックビデオやグラフィックまでもを自分達で手掛ける。彼らのロックはどこかかわいらしく親しみやすいがどこか狂気を匂わせ、長いこと私たちは彼らのインスピレーション源が気になっていた（彼らのビデオ “Fluffy Tails” が良い例！）。
彼らの美しいくらいシンプルで上等な音楽の型の裏には深い思考とアーティスティックなアイディアがあるに違いない。リズム感のよい2本のエレキギターとメロディアスなベースはいつも聴く者の注意を引き、その超細やかでひたむきなドラミングは私たちを夢中にさせる。彼らは絶頂のサビまでどのようにメロディを進行させれば効果的であるかということを心得ており、巧みに実践していることを初めて彼らを見たショーの1曲目から感じ取った。
彼らを一人一人見ていこう。ギタリストのE-cigはロックなリフを見せつけるようなことはせず、どこかおどけた調子の音を鳴らす。ライヴよりもレコーディングが好きだという彼のそのギター音は、曲をいきいきとさせる為に研究を重ねて得たもの。絶対に注目すべきはLittle Fellaの極上のドラミング！無駄や不自然さがなく、スーパーエコ！変に格好つけたりしないそのドラミングは素の美しい音楽を届けてくれる。彼のように無心にドラムを叩くのはとても難しそうだけれども、彼はただ常にシンプルなドラミングを心がけていると私たちに教えてくれた。その謙虚な姿勢は尊敬に値する。Wheelerの一見クールなベースは、音の重なりの底の部分で楽しげに跳ねたり飛んだりしている。彼は時々ベースを背中にしょってシンセを弾き、曲に色やテクスチャーを加える。ボーカルのEdは典型的なロッカーになるには繊細すぎる心の持ち主。彼は社会的な事柄を童話に落とし込むのが大得意である。そんな彼の頭の中では一体どんな面白おかしい世界が広がっているのか覗いてみたい。彼のその親しみやすい声のおかげで、私たちは彼が物語る童話の世界に浸ることができる。それに加えて、どこか私たちに想像する余白を残してくれる。そんな彼は、ゴリゴリのロッカー達よりも全然かっこいい！
そんな4人で音を奏でるだけでも十分聴きごたえがあるのだが、何よりもこのバンドを特異なものとしているのはその可愛い編曲とバックコーラスである。彼らは子供っぽい印象を持たれることに躊躇しない。そんな彼らのスタイルは私たちに「ネオテニー」という言葉を思い出させる。「ネオテニー」とは幼児のような形質を成熟しても保持する現象のことであり、ダーウィンの進化論を基に論じられている。オックスフォード大学の動物学者Clive Bromhallはこの幼形成熟こそ、人間が進んでいる進化の方向であると説いた。もしこれが本当なら（私たちは90%信じている）、House Plantsは最も進化的なバンドだと言える！そして偶然にも、彼らの曲には多くの動物が登場する。
もう私たちにとってHouse Plantsとダーウィニズムは切っても切れない。身勝手な解釈だが、両方とも同じメッセージを伝えてくれる。
「あなたの先祖は誰一人として弱くなかったから、あなたは今ここに存在する。そして、あなたは精子の大競争の末に生まれた。さらには、この世に誕生してから今日まであなたは多くのリスクにさらされてきたが、あなたは驚くことに今、ここにいる。そうあなたは強い！」
落ち込んだ時はHouse Plantsの曲を聴いてみると、明るい気持ちが湧きあがってくる。そして、彼らの曲を毎日聴くようにすれば、心の免疫力が高まり、つまらないことにいちいちくよくよすることもなくなる！
Colorful and playful, House Plants make fun music that reflects how highly evolved they are.
House Plants are based in South London and consist of Ed, Wheeler, E-cig and Little Fella. They have a strong D.I.Y spirit and self-produce their music videos and graphics. Their rock music is casual, charming and peaceful with a hint of insanity that makes us wonder about their creative source(check out their video for “Fluffy Tails”!).
Their beautifully simple and fine music form must be based on deep thoughts and artistic ideas. The rhythmic electric guitars & melodic bass always hook the listener and their super tidy drumming intrigues us. From the very start of their show we were able to tell this band knew how to carry a melody towards an exciting chorus and handle it excellently.
Let’s look at them one by one. The guitarist, E-cig makes funny sounds in the songs rather than showing off a shred guitar style or rockin’ riffs. He told us he prefers being in the studio rather than performing at gigs. We guess he experiments to find those unique sounds in order to animate the songs. What we can’t ignore is Little Fella’s brilliant drumming! No waste and no artificiality, it’s super eco-conscious! His drumming serves the music rather than being overly-complicated. It must be very difficult to be like him but he told us he just wanted to make it simple. We respect his humble idea. Wheeler’s bass guitar is cool but he’s still hopping and jumping joyfully in the bassline. Wheeler sometimes carries his bass guitar on his back and plays synth to add colour and texture. The vocalist is Ed, whose sensibility is too delicate to be a typical rocker. He’s good at tailoring social issues to fairy tales. We’d love to peek inside his head and see what kind of amusing and slightly sarcastic world is existing there. With his friendly voice, we can immerse ourselves in the story he tells. Also, he leaves some space in the melody, giving us a chance to use our imagination. He’s way cooler than most rock stars!
More than just the sum of their parts, what makes them distinctive is their cute composition & backing vocals. They don’t care if their songs are received as childish. Their style reminds us of the word “Neoteny”; the retention of childlike features in an adult, which is a theory based on Darwinism. An Oxford zoologist, Clive Bromhall explained that being childlike is the evolutional goal of humanity. If this is true (we believe this 90 percent), House Plants must be the most evolved band! Coincidently, a variety of animals appear in their songs.
For us, House Plants and Darwinism are no longer separable. This may be a selfish understanding but both tell us a message; you exist because none of your ancestors were weak, you were born after a big seminal race. Moreover, there were lots of risk up to today, but you are amazingly here so be proud of yourself!
Whenever you are down, listen to some songs by House Plants and you’ll feel happy. And if you listen to them every day, you’ll feel inspired to get over the bad ones too!
