唯一無二の個性派バンド、House Plants。ずっと長いこと気になっていた彼らのクリエーションの源泉を聞き出すチャンスが巡ってきました！以下、インタビューの一部始終です。

1.自己紹介をお願いします。

僕はEd、リズムギターを弾いて歌ってる。

2.House Plantsの歴史を教えて！

House Plantsの起源は、やんちゃ盛りの頃、僕とlittle fella、Wheelerが友達のGeoとNickと共にThe Mavericks of Loveというバンドを組んで音楽をやっていた頃に遡るよ。よく一緒にいて色々学びあったよ。当時は本当に楽しかったし、すごく良い曲を作ったんだ(ぜひ聴いて欲しいな)、 ‘Flies in a Jar’, ‘Shitzilla’ に ‘Shapes are Blurred’とか。でも残念ながら皆それぞれの道(大学)を行くことになって、バンドは解散。今でも地元のケンブリッジに帰省した時は皆で集まったりするけど、クリスマスや夏休みにまともなことをするのに十分な時間がとれないんだ。大学時代の後、Wheelerが僕とlittle fellaと暮らすためにロンドンにやってきたんだ。この時にE-cigも加わった。E-cigは僕の大学時代のダチで、すげぇいい奴で、ギターが弾けてサウスイースト・ロンドンでバリバリ生粋のロンドンっ子として名を馳せてた。一時期、僕らは皆で’Bourgeois John／Fat Son’と呼んでた友達とサウス・ロンドンで暮らしてたんだけど、出てっちゃって。だから残念だけど彼抜きでバンドを組むのは自然の流れだった。僕らは最初Rawshankという名で、次にTilapia、そしてHouse Plantsとバンド名を変えたよ。バンドのこれまでの歴史の中でアイデンティティ危機を体験してきたよ。Rawshank時代には英国海軍Jake Taylorがベースとキーボードを担当してたんだけど、音信不通になってしびれを切らしたよ。彼は実際にはBBCラジオで働いていて、今は電機系のことをやっているみたいだから出会う価値はあったよ。Tilapia時代は楽しかった。ニュークロス(ロンドン)でEPをレコーディングして、いくつかミュージックビデオを手作りしたんだ。そしてたくさんの良いバンドに出会った。House Plantsは僕にとって、もっとバンドを感じさせるもの。バンドの一生の最愛の友人’Jim Jam’と僕の祖父母の家でレコーディングして、それをAdam Lasusに送ってミックスしてもらったんだ。Adam Lasus はバンドの、そして僕のヒーローだよ。これが僕にとって最も誇らしい瞬間だね。

3.最近発表した曲’Speech Bubbles’について教えてくれる？

Speech Bubbles はSoundcloudにアップした新曲。僕はあの曲を15分で書いて、携帯に録音して、メンバーに送ったら皆「いいじゃん、これで行こう」って感じになったんだ。だから次に練習で集まった時にはすべて出来上がった。実際、メンバーとの曲作りはとてもシンプルだったよ。曲は労働者が「吹き出し」を作る工場について歌ってるんだ。でもその労働者達は皆話すのが怖いんだ。そして彼らは空に浮かぶ巨大な太陽の中にいることを夢見るんだ、そこではすべての工場の部品がガラクタに解体されてしまうんだ。時は経って、彼らは機械の掃除を終え、上等な絵画やその他(歌詞に登場してくるもの)、精神上もっと価値のあるものを作るようになるんだ。とにかく、大事なことは、労働者達は仲良く一緒に時を過ごしてるってことなんだ。友情はお金では買えないよ。

4.曲作りはどうやっているの？

僕はコードと歌詞を自分の部屋で組み合わせて、ガレージバンドの録音されたドラムビートに乗せてレコーディングするんだ。どうしたらもっとよくなるか考えて、バンドと話し合って、皆でlittle fellaのところに行って、満足するまで何度も演奏するんだ。メンバーは大抵、それぞれ自分のパートを作るけど、もし僕が譲れないリフとかドラムビートを頭の中に描いていたら、意固地になっちゃうね。実際にFellaは自分のパートを全部書くよ、僕がドラムを演奏できないから。でも僕は時々色んなドラム音を口でやってみせるんだ、Fellaはわかってくれるだろうと思って。大半はわかってもらえてるって感じるのが好きなんだ。

5.何にインスパイアされる？どうして動物について歌うことが多いの？

動物がそれほど好きなわけじゃないんだ。人間の方が好きだし、興味深いと思う。動物は問題ないよ。猫みたいに可愛いのもいる。でもそれより、動物は色々なキャラクターに置き換えることができるっていうことが重要なんだ。種の違う動物はそれぞれ確固としたマンネリズム／ 習慣／ライフスタイルを持っているでしょ。人間が皆違う考えを持ち、全く異なる振る舞いををするようにね。でも、人間がどのように見えるのか、人間は食べて、寝て、クソして、コミュニケーションをとる、そのすべてが動物に似ていて、関連があると僕は思うんだ。このことについてさらに説明すると、動物の中には、木の上で寝るやつ、水中で寝るやつ（つまり魚。あれっ、魚って寝るっけ？)、地中にいる蟻を食べるやつ、水中に潜ってカニを捕るやつがいる。だから、僕が人間の行動や人間そのものについて話したい時、動物の型に例えるとすごくやり易いんだ。何も真新しいことじゃないよ、ディズニーは何十年もやってることだ。

6.どんな音楽が好きなの？

僕の一番好きなアルバムはPet SoundsかForever Changes。僕の彼女と家飲みする時はABBAをかけるよ。

7.House Plantsにとって一番大事なものは何？

友情

8.今のロンドンのミュージックシーンはどんな感じ？

すごくいいよ、特に20代半ばのDIYバンド（というか、このシーンしかよく知らないけど)。今が一番グラマラスだとは思わないよ、「おぉ、すごい豪華でインスタグラムにもたくさんのってる」っていう感じじゃないし。だけど皆いい人たちで、飲んで、靴について話して楽しんでる。バンドももちろんよい。僕のいちおしはbrunch。彼らは丁度アルバムを出したとこなんだ。Pavementファンにおすすめ。駆け出しのFootballというバンドもいいよ…フットボールが好きなもんでね。

9.日本についてどう思う？

日本に行ったことがないから答えるのがすごく難しいよ。正直日本の音楽は何も知らないんだ。きっと日本には良い音楽がいっぱいあると確信してるよ、だから掘り進む方向を教えてもらえると嬉しいな。’Japanese music’ でググってみたいけど、うまくいかないんだろうな。さっきやってみたけど、’traditional Japanese music’ って笛をたくさん使うようなものが出てきたんだ。笛の音はとても素敵だけど、違うものが日本にはもっと色々あると想像してるよ。

10.日本のリスナーにメッセージをお願いします！

もし日本に僕らの音楽を聴いてくれてる人がいるなら、日本のシーンにこんなに疎い自分が恥ずかしいよ。日本について色々教えてほしいな。

House Plants are a one-of-a-kind band. Finally, we’ve grabbed a chance to peek into their creative source. It’s something that we’ve been wondering about for ages! And this is what happened…

1. Would you introduce yourself?

Ed- Play the rhythm guitar and sing.

2. Please tell us the history of House Plants.

House Plants dates back to the mid-noughties when myself and bandmates, little fella and Wheeler, used to play music with our friends Geo and Nick in a band called The Mavericks of Love. We used to hang out and learn from each other. We had a really good time and made some real nice songs (worth a listen), with hits such as ‘Flies in a Jar’, ‘Shitzilla’ and ‘Shapes are Blurred’. Unfortunately though everyone ended up going their separate ways (university) and although we still met/meet up back in our hometown of Cambridge, we didn’t/don’t have enough time at xmas and summer holidays to get anything together of any real significance. But after university, Wheeler moved down to London to live with me and little fella. This is where E-cig comes in. He was my mate from uni, was a very cool man, played guitar and proved to be the hardest geezer in the South-East. We all ended up living together in South London with a friend called ‘Bourgeois John/Fat Son’ and it made sense to make a band- regrettably without Bourgeois Jon in it. At first we were called Rawshank, then we were called Tilapia and then we were called House Plants. Throughout the band’s history we have had an identity crisis. During our Rawshank phase we had HMS Jake Taylor on the bass and keys, but we didn’t hear from him for a while and got impatient. He actually works for BBC radio, smokes fish and does some electronic stuff now… So he’s probably worth hitting up. Tilapia phase was fun. We recorded an ep in New Cross, made a couple of home-made music videos and met lots of very good bands. House Plants feels to me a lot more like a ‘band’. We recorded an ep with the band’s eternal best friend ‘Jim Jam’ at my grandmother and grandfather’s house and then sent that off to Adam Lasus who ‘mixed it down’. Adam Lasus is a hero of ours and for me, this is my proudest moment in the band.

3.Would you tell us about your song “Speech Bubbles”?

Speech Bubbles is a new song that we just put up on Soundcloud. I wrote it in about 15 minutes and recorded it on my phone and sent it to the guys and they were like ‘yeah man it’s ok’. So when we next practiced it all came out and was actually very simple to write with the guys. It’s about a factory where the employees make speech bubbles, but everyone who works there is afraid to speak. They then dream of being in a massive sun in the sky where all the factory parts have been demolished into junk and toys. Time passes, and they end up cleaning all the machinery to make ‘fine’ paintings and other things that are, in the context of the song, deemed as’more emotionally valuable’. Anyway, the important thing is that all the employees of the factory stick together and have a good time. You really can’t put a price on friendship.

4.How does each member work when you make songs?

I put some chords and lyrics together in my room, then record them to a processed drum beat on garage band. I have a think about what could go over it, discuss it with the band, we go into little fella’s caveroom and play it over and over until we are happy. Wheeler, fella and e-cig tend to write their own parts, but if I’ve got a certain riff or drumbeat in my mind that I won’t let go of then I can be a bit stubborn… Fella actually writes all his parts as I can’t play the drums. But I sometimes make the sounds of various drums with my mouth thinking he knows what I mean… I like to think that most of the time he does.

5. What inspires you? Why do you tend to sing about animals?

I don’t actually like animals THAT much. I prefer humans and find them more interesting. Animals are OK. Some of them are cute, like cats. I think it’s more that animals can very easily be manipulated into different characters… Different animals are very defined in their mannerisms/habits/lifestyle, whereas different human beings may think differently and do things completely differently. But the way humans look, eat, sleep, shit and communicate is all very similar, relative to animals. To labor the point, some animals sleep in trees, some underwater (fish technically I guess/ do fish sleep?), some feast on ants underground and some dive down into the water to find crabs. So if I want to talk about human behavior and human beings, I can do that much easier by labeling them with the form of an animal. It’s nothing new… Disney have been doing it for decades.

6. What kind of music are you into?

My favorite album is either Pet Sounds or Forever Changes. My girlfriend and I will put ABBA on when we get home drunk.

8. What do you think of the music scene in London at the moment?

It’s really good, especially the DIY mid-twenties bands (the only scene i actually know much about). It’s not the most glamorous. It’s not the vibe of ‘oh there’s so and so from instagram’, but the people are nice, enjoy drinking and talking about crep /es. The bands are especially good as well. my recommendation would be brunch. they have just brought out an album. for fans of Pavement. there’s a new band on the horizon called ‘Football’… I love football.

9. What do you think about Japan?

I have never been to Japan so that’s a really hard question. And I have to be honest, I don’t know any Japanese music. I am sure there is a huge amount of great Japanese music, so maybe you should point me in the right direction? I feel like typing ‘Japanese music’ into google won’t do the job. I just did exactly that and I got ‘traditional Japanese music’ with lots of flutes. Although flutes are very nice sounding, I’m guessing there’s a lot more out there.

10. Would you give a message to your Japanese listeners?

If we have any listeners in Japan, I am sorry I am so ignorant about the Japanese scene. I would welcome any suggestions you have for me.
