YOWLのかっこよさは一体どこから来るのか探ってみよう。このちょい悪な青年たちは真の哲学者で本物のアーティストだ！！！
1.自己紹介をお願いします。
Yo、僕らはYOWL(Gabriel, Mike, Ivor, Tom)、6フィート(182cm)の4人組で、ロンドンのペッカムとウェールズのカーディフが拠点だよ。（※YOWLはごく最近、新メンバーJakeを迎え、5人編成となった。）
2.いつどうやってバンドを結成したの？バンド名の由来は？
2014年に結成したよ。それ以前に色々なプロジェクトを一緒にやってきたから、音楽的にも組織的な観点からも、もっと結合したバンドを組むのはいいことだと思ったんだ。
名前に関しては、僕らはただThe ClashやWham!みたいな、擬音語を効かせた偉大なバンドの力強さにあやかりたかったんだと思う。
3.どんな音楽から影響を受けている？
自分たちの関心を引くものなら何でも。僕らは何かからインスピレーションを受けることに戸惑ったりしないんだ、例えそれが今まで書いた曲とミスマッチだったとしても。僕らの曲には、カントリーミュージックの影響を少なからず受けているものがあるね、当初のYOWLのマニフェストには決して見られなかったけど、多分これは何よりMikeがカーディフのレコード屋で安いアルバムを大量に買い込んだせいなんだろうな。
4.曲作りはどうやっているの？
自分たちのソングライティングのテクニックは誰からでもアクセス可能で、本質的には2種類あるかな。MikeかIvorがギターのパートを書いてからGabrielが数時間、言葉をのせたりシャウトを浴びせるんだ、ゆるくて薄っぺらなただの音のかたまりをもっとはっきりとした曲に凝結させるまでね。
5.あなた達の曲には特別な思想が根付いてたりするの？
偽りのない感情を皮肉気なゴシックユーモアのプリズムを通して表現するっていうのが型かな。自分達は「テーマ」を決めて曲作りに入る傾向があるけれど、単純に響きが良いフレーズによって変化を受けることがある。多分、曲作りの実践において焦点を絞れていないんだろうけど、でもMichael Stipeみたいな人は常にこういう手法で深い音楽を作り出してきたし、この策略で自分達もいつかは彼の域に達せるかもしれない。
6.演奏している時、オーディエンスのリアクションを気にする？
あぁ、間違いなくね。「どれだけオーディエンスがノッているか」と「どれだけ僕らが進んで与えられるか」ということの間には、暗黙のポジティブな相互関係が存在していると思うんだ。だけどその裏面として、僕らは何回か後味が悪い大敗を味わったよ。観客がステージから遠いバーから全然離れようとしなかったんだ。
7.おすすめのバンドを教えてくれない？
僕らは最近何組か本当に良いバンドと演奏してきたんだ。Labradoorは僕らが企画したライブのヘッドライナーを務めたんだけど、興味をそそられる曲を持ってるよね。あとVirgin Kidsは皆にチェックしてほしい。彼らの音は超かっこいいガレージ。それにすごいいい人達なんだ。
8.YOWLにとって一番大事なものは何？
自分らの体を作り上げているカーボン万歳、それにギター。

9.日本についてどう思う？
Tomは去年日本に行って、大満足だったんだ。彼は、東京、京都、山梨、直島、それ以外にも色々行ったんだよ。彼が受けた面白いレッスンは、日本人は歩きながら食べたりタバコ吸ったりしないこと（難しいね）、日本人は白い靴下にサンダルを履いていてもかっこいいこと、自動販売機は本物で、新幹線は未来的だってこと。日本では明らかにアートの面で面白いことが起こっているみたいだね。
10.日本のリスナーにメッセージをお願いします！
僕らはちょっとした計算をしてみたんだけど、もし東京にいる人が全員僕らのフライト代のために募金してくれたら、一人当たり0.2円で済むんだ。だから、もしそれを実行してくれたら、皆の優しさに感謝するし、僕らはお返しとして皆が望むだけライブをやるよ。
そういう計算が君たちの頭の良さと小憎ったらしさを表しているよね（総じて大好きです）。

1. Would you introduce yourselves?
Yo, we’re YOWL (Gabriel, Mike, Ivor and Tom), a four-piece with six feet in Peckham and two in Cardiff.
(Recently, they got their 5th member, Jake.)
2. When/How did you guys start a band? Why did you name the band “YOWL”?
We started in 2014 – we’d all worked on various projects together before so it seemed like a good idea to form a cohesive band from both a musical and organisational standpoint.
In terms of the name, I guess we just wanted to be a part of the strong lineage of the other onomatopoeic greats like The Clash and Wham!
3. What kind of music gives you inspiration?
Anything that grabs our attention really. We’re not coy about drawing inspiration from something if it seems like it might be mismatched with stuff we’ve written already. There’s a bit of a country influence in some of our tracks, which was in no way apparent in the original YOWL manifesto and is probably more down to Mike buying a bunch of the cheapest albums from a Cardiff record store than anything else.
4. How does each member work when you make songs?
Our songwriting technique is accessible for everyone and essentially has two slight variations – Mike or Ivor will have written a guitar part that Gabriel then either mumbles or shouts over for several hours until a loose, flappy chunk of sound congeals into a more distinct song.
5. Do you have a particular idea behind your songs?
Usually it’s some form of genuine emotion played through a prism of tongue-in-cheek gothic humour. We tend to start a song by working with ‘themes’ but sometimes these get waylaid in favour of phrases that simply sound good – it’s probably a poorly-focused creative practice but people like Michael Stipe do it all the time and manage to sound profound, so with enough finesse we might too someday.
6. Do you consider the reaction of your audience while you are on stage?
Yeah definitely. I think there’s an implicit positive correlation between how much the audience are moving and how much we’re willing to give. On the flipside of that though, we’ve had a couple of gigs where we’ve ended up sarcastically thrashing in the direction of crowds that refuse to move away from the bar at the far end of the room.
7. Would you recommend us some bands to check out?
For sure, we’ve played with a couple of great ones recently – Labradoor headlined the last show we put on and they make some really pretty tunes. Virgin Kids are another one we try to get everyone to check out, massive garage sound and they’re gr8 guys to boot.
8. What is the most important element of YOWL?
All hail the carbon that makes up our bodies and guitars.

9. What do you think about Japan?
Tom went to Japan last year and loved it. He did Tokyo, Kyoto, Yamanashi and Naoshima Island, to name a few. Some fun things he learnt: people are not into eating or smoking while walking (this was tough), people can pull off white socks and sandals, vending machines are legit well good and bullet trains are the future. There’s some really interesting stuff going on within the Arts in Japan apparently.
10. Please give a message to your Japanese listeners!
We did some quick maths and if everyone in Tokyo chipped in for all our plane tickets it would cost around 0.2 yen each, so if they could sort that out for us that’d be really nice of them and we’d play as many shows as they like in return.
